Water Rates

Kinneloa Irrigation District does not estimate water usage. The meters are read monthly to facilitate monthly billing.

The KID water rate has two components:

  1. Daily Service Charge: The first component is a readiness to serve charge which is shown on the billing statement as Daily Service Charge and is $2.48 per day or $75.43 for an average monthly billing cycle.  This charge is computed on the actual number of days between meter readings.
  2. Usage Charge: The second component is a volumetric charge which is shown on the billing statement as Usage Charge and is $6.20 per unit which is equivalent to one hundred cubic feet (CCF) or 748 gallons.

These rates are effective starting December 27, 2023.

A gallon of Kinneloa Irrigation District tap water costs less than one penny ($0.006).  If you bought a 16.9 oz (500 ml) bottle of water for $2.00, for the same cost you could fill with KID tap water a one-gallon container more than 330 times, or refill that same 16.9 oz bottle more than 2500 times. KID water receives far more stringent water quality testing and is regulated by the California State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water and the Environmental Protection Agency. Bottled water is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.

The average person’s indoor water usage is 80-100 gallons of water per day. One thousand gallons serves a typical consumer for about 10 days, so tap water is not very expensive.  Of the amount charged for 1,000 gallons, about $0.30 to $0.50 pays for treatment; the rest pays for installation and perpetual maintenance of the pipes in the street, the well and pumping facilities, the salaries of the employees who work for us, the general expenses of running the company including electricity, insurance, permits, vehicles, fuel and general office expenses.
